Anti-Virus Software Overview
From Gripe Wiki
People tend to be very passionate about their choice of anti-virus software. The goal of this overview is to provide an objective outline of the market, so please edit it with an eye to improving it in that regard. And, of course, make sure your favorite is listed and that the linked story does a good job of portraying how the product works.
Symantec is the dominant player in the Windows anti-virus market by virtue of its Norton AntiVirus brand, having distanced itself somewhat from former close rival McAfee. Other vendors have been gaining greatly in popularity in recent years. AVG from Grisoft, which has a free version for home and personal use, was for example easily able to outpoll Symantec and all others in the recent GripeLog poll. Trend Micro and NOD32 also made strong showings.
Many vendors, such as Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Computer Associates and others, also offer a corporate/enterprise line of anti-virus products. These products have their own heading below for enterprise-level anti-virus products. To create a story about an enterprise level product that you've had experience with, go to the "edit" tab above, find the section for Enterprise products in the source code and then in double brackets include the vendornameEnterpriseAV like this [[Symantec Enterprise AV]]. Save the story and a link will be created that you can go to and start typing.
Anti-virus versions for Linux are offered by Clam, F-Prot, NOD32, Panda and others. Macintosh versions are available from Symantec, McAfee, Sophos and others.
A critical factor in evaluating anti-virus software is the distribution method for updated virus definitions. These can vary greatly in terms of frequency, ease of distribution, and pricing.
Below is the list of anti-virus products we've compiled so far. You can add a product to the list in the edit tab of this page. To begin, add, or edit the story about one of the products, click on the link and then access the edit tab for that page.
