Talk:Main Page

From Gripe Wiki

Didn't know how to revert the page, so I just deleted the ads. (Hopefully someone can revert back to an earlier page.) I attempted to copy the earlier text in:

I apologize for the performance problems we're having to start with -- we'll get it fixed. If it's too slow right now, I hope you'll visit us again later.Test --Ed Foster 11:41, 8 Aug 2005 (PDT)

can anybody really edit this thing ? how long before somebody removes this stupid question in this inappropriate place ?

Yes, anyone can edit. It's a beautiful thing that takes some getting-used-to

Yes, and it's not that stupid a question, or in that inappropriate a place. This is the place for discussing how the Gripe Wiki works. There are things we can do to lock certain content or give different users different permission levels, and we'll no doubt want to consider doing some of those things in the future. So by all means talk about it right here.

Ed & Jeff,

Thanks for starting this. It is something very much needed to help counter all the hype. Keep up the good work.

I am new to this WIKI thing but am used to forums. Something I do miss is the ability to see *who* said what, something that forum accounts can give you. How do you do that in a WIKI? -cjb Ahh. I see it now, the "create an account or log in" link at the top. -cjb again

For those who don't follow cjb's answer to his/her own question, logging in allows for attribution of the user's contributions. The contributions (= changes) can be viewed by clicking the "history" tab at the top of the page - click that to view history of changes to the main article OR of changes to the discussion, depending on which one you're looking at when you click. -Tangent

Additionally, once you actually have a user id to log in with, then after editing you can type ~~~ for your name to be automatically filled in when you save. Also ~~~~ gives name along with date and time. 65.222.97.68 14:04, 13 Sep 2005 (PDT) (See - it just looks silly when done when you aren't logged in - but it still works!) Here's how it looks when you have an id --> Dragonlove

Performance is still a bit on the slow side. - 8/18/05

REVERT main to 5 Sep 2005

It seems obvious that the latest main page:

02:10, 21 Sep 2005 61.50.141.192

is fake, useless... and there should be some way to block such material and revert to the previous material, e.g.

5 Sep 2005 67.125.93.234

I don't know where it is appropriate to start a new discussion area as to whether their should be some way to "vet" the WIKI structure so that pages that are put in the mail line are approved by the "original" author.

Yes, this is the right place to have that discussion. I don't know if there is a way to give original authors the ability to vet changes to their work. If there is, I'd like to hear about it. We can lock pages so that only admins can change them, and perhaps that's what we should do with the main page at least. What do folks think. --Ed Foster 11:56, 23 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Some notes on page restrictions: I don't know if you folks have already read this Wikimedia help article about page access restriction but I think it may be of use. Also, there is quite a bit of discussion about anti-spam features for MediaWiki here. --RichMoffitt
